Derby Line Fire Department 911 Sign Program

The Derby Line Fire Department 911 Sign Program was started in 2010 as a way to provide affordable reflective address signs to the citizens of our town and the surrounding areas. The profit made from the signs stays directly in the fire department and is used to cover sign costs and other incidentals. Arrangements can be made for those who cannot afford a 911 sign and help with installation is available to those that are unable to do so themselves.

Derby Line Fire Department responds to over 100 emergency calls a year. These calls range from motor vehicle collisions to structure fires to wildfires and more. We take tremendous pride in our ability to respond quickly from the town’s two fire stations in just minutes to mitigate these situations. Derby Line firefighters take pride in knowing all the streets in the towns that we serve. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to locate the address which we are being called to render aid.

The State of Vermont has adopted a code that helps ensure that buildings are well marked and easy to identify. NFPA-1 Section 10.12 “Marking of Premises” states: “New and existing buildings shall have address numbers placed in a position plainly legible and visible from the street.”

Statistics show that even a few seconds saved not “searching” for a house number can significantly improve the outcome during a significant medical and fire emergency. It is also a fact that fire doubles in size every minute given the right conditions. This means finding the correct address PROMPTLY can help us prevent a trash fire from turning into a room and contents fire and ultimately a structure fire.

Here are a few things to remember when posting your 911 numbers:

-All numbers should be visible from the street and not covered by trees or bushes.

-Numbers should be at least 4 inches in height and reflective.  Remember, numbers posted by the road prevent the responder from having to take his eyes off the road while traveling.

-Numbers should be a color that stands out from the color on which they are mounted. As nice as they look, brass numbers on a white background are not easy to locate, even during the daytime.

-Utilize numerals. Fancy lettering that spells out numbers can be confusing and difficult to read from the street.

-Numbers should be posted so they can be seen from BOTH travel directions – even on a dead end road. It is also important to post them at any “fork” in your driveway.

-Keep mailbox numbers clear of tall grass and snow.

It is also important if you own a business that the address number is marked well there too.  We are not always provided the business name by our dispatchers.

Derby Line Fire Department offers reflective 911 signs that are for sale at the Derby, Holland, and Morgan town clerks. Other communities offer them as well. Many configurations can be created including arrows and letters. EVERY house has a 911 number. If you don’t know yours, call your local town clerks office.
